Featuring works that go beyond the traditional expectations of art, the New York Outsider Art Fair gives a different perspective. Held at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street) from January 17 to 20th, the Outsider Art Fair features an array of artists from the 20th century and today that were self taught or operated with methods and techniques that challenge the fine art world.

The Fair will also include plenty of panel discussions and lectures.”Unusual Brains: Neurodiversity and Artistic Creation” examines the lives and work of artists that lived under psychiatric care.”Trolling at Hotel”, held at the Ace Hotel lobby (20 W 29th St), looks at how a hotel became a shrine to figurines with unkempt hair. “Good Kids: Underground Comics from China” highlights the rise of zines and underground comix in China from the late 1990s to today. “Phyllis Kind, Outsider Art's Grande Dame“ celebrates the life and legacy of OAF founding participant, Phyllis Kind, who worked to promote and preserve the creations of outsider artists.

We’re continuing our coverage of the deluge of art shows in Miami this December, so don’t forget to check out parts one, two, and three.
Performed in conjunction with Art Basel, Design Miami is touted as a global forum for design with collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around. Running December 5 to 9 next door to the Miami Beach Convention Center at Meridian Avenue and 19th Street, Design Miami specializes in furniture, lighting and “objets d’art”. Works from Berlin’s Functional Art Gallery, Galleria Antonella Villanova of Florence, and New York’s Magen H. Gallery will be on display. The show will also have panel discussions and talks on socially sustainable architecture, modernism, design education and more.
Context Miami, running December 4 - 9 at the former Miami Herald site at Bayscane Bay, is an companion to the Art Miami show. Context is dedicated to the development and reinforcement of mid-career artists, providing an oppotunity for galleries to get acquainted with less seen and newer talent. Along with talks and exhibitors, Context has special works on exhibition such as Stefan Yordanov’s "Pegasus 2.0", Julian Voss-Andreae’s “Quantum Meditation” and Jorge Jiménez Deredia’s “Pareja”.

Miami Art Show Showcase Part 3: Untitled, Ink, & NADA

Just when you thought Miami might actually be done with art shows, we’re here to fill you in on even more slated for this December! For more, see parts one and two.
Founded in 2012, Untitled Miami Beach (December 5 - 9) at Ocean Drive and 12th Street in South Beach, is an international curated art show looking at a wide range of disciplines from contemporary art. The Untitled curatorial team curates a selection of galleries, artist-run exhibition spaces, and non-profit institutions and organizations specially for the show. Along with a wide selection of exhibitors the show also has special events such as the book launch of Devan Shimoyama: Cry, Baby, with the artist in attendance and doing a panel discussion beforehand. “Sheldon Scott: lifelong affirmations during childhood acts of faggotry” is a performance piece on childhood queerness and identity. And Changing Room is an installation and performance presented by Girls’ Club featuring dancer/choreographer Jenny Larsson in collaboration with visual artists Lucinda Linderman, Michelle Weinberg and Natalie Zlamalova.
Ink Miami Art Fair (December 5 - 9) at the Dorchester Miami Beach (1850 Collins Ave, Miami Beach), transforms the hotel into a extensive art gallery. The Fair is unique among Miami's fairs for its focus on modern and contemporary works on paper by internationally renowned artists.
The 16th edition of NADA Miami (December 6–9) at Ice Palace Studios (1400 N Miami Ave), is dedicated to showcasing new art and to celebrating the rising talents from around the globe. Seeking to emphasize talents from outside the “art establishment”, NADA (which stands for New Art Dealers Alliance) features sculptures and installations such as Miami’s Fringe Projects by Detroit-based artist and creator of the Heidelberg Project, Tyree Guyton.

Miami Art Show Showcase Part 2: Art Basel Miami & Scope

As we pointed out in part one, Miami is going to be awash in art shows this December, each one vying for the attention and patronage of art collectors and seekers.
Art Basel Miami Beach (December 6 - 9), at the Miami Beach Convention Center (1901 Convention Center Drive), is part of the globe-spanning art shows based out of Switzerland, features over 200 galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa with Modern and contemporary art, as well as new and emerging talent. The exhibition hall will include paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and films for show-goers to peruse. The show includes a series of lectures and panel discussions on subjects such as sustainable museum funding, art education, and what art audiences are like in the 21st century. Exhibitors include Alfonso Artiaco, Bodega, DAN Galeria and many more.
The Scope Miami Beach art show (December 4 - 9) at 801 Ocean Drive, is now in its 18th edition, and has been honored by the City of Miami Beach Mayor’s Office and Commission for its extraordinary cultural impact. Scope Miami Beach features 140 International Exhibitors from 25 countries including Art Unified, Gallery We, Modus, and more. The show will be curated by art magazine Hi-Fructose, and look at contemporary and street artists such as Okuda, HOTTEA, and AJ Fosik. Hi-Fructose will also be conducting a series of panel discussions. A special exhibition by Netherlands-based artist Hajar Benjida, “Young Thug as Paintings”, pays homage to the cultural capital of Jeffery Lamar Williams, better known as Young Thug, one of the most influential musical artists of this generation by juxtaposing him with some of history's most revered works of art.
