ZombieCon 2009

There are still two weeks until Halloween, and already the undead are out in force. ZombieCon, the annual parade of the bloody, the battered and the strangely animated, takes place on Saturday. Participants in this loosely organized spectacle  roam the streets of Manhattan dressed in their best grave-defying fashions with gaping wounds et al, spending the afternoon scaring children and shopkeepers and hunting for brains (and beer).

“ZombieCon combines the things we love most (costumes, street theater and Halloween parties) with a wry commentary on what we see as the mindless consumer nature of the holiday and mainstream party scenes,” Irene Kaoru Malatesta, a creator of the event and a graphic designer by day, wrote in an e-mail message. “The first three years had us beginning our invasion down Fifth Avenue for maximum contrast between the chic shops and our bedraggled horde.”

The opportunity for cultural jamming is especially ripe: suggested outfits include zombie stockbroker, zombie bull market and zombie Brooklyn food co-op manager. Of course some people just go for the creativity.

“My all-time favorite might be zombie Charlie Brown — he carried a handmade thought bubble that said simply, ‘Grief,’ ” wrote Malatesta, who plans to do her best Michael  in “Thriller.”

As with any attack, stealth is key; Though it's held on Oct. 24th, 2009, location information for the event is not released in advance.

PPE09 announces a new Video Pavilion created for manufacturers of video cameras, hardware, software and accessories and provides attendees with an inside look at the ever-changing landscape of the photographic industry and future business opportunities these converging technologies present to photographers and videographers alike.

“For the past 25 years, PhotoPlus Expo has evolved to  stay ahead of the changes and growing business applications in the photographic and visual communications industries,” explains Jeff McQuilkin, PDN PhotoPlus Expo Show Director.  “The convergence of technologies in photography and video, along with new applications and business opportunities finds us evolving once again to include an exhibitor pavilion dedicated to video products.  We anticipate tremendous interest among attendees and will continue to educate our audience about the future of photography through seminars, keynote presentations, and expert panel discussions,” McQuilkin added.

PhotoPlus Expo has become more than an annual trade show for industry leaders including Nikon, Canon, Eastman Kodak, and more than 100 other manufacturers.  It has become the meeting place where photographers and other visual communications professionals can share their thoughts and ideas with peers, learn new trends and applications from the Masters, and gain a unique perspective into the future of their craft.

Designed for professionals in the photographic and imaging industries, PDN PhotoPlus showcases the latest advances in photography, both traditional and digital. Held annually at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, attendees have the opportunity to explore an inspiring array of photography and imaging products and services - everything from image capture and color management to retouching and storage - all from the industry's leading manufacturers.  The show also offers over 100 photography and imaging seminars and hands-on workshops taught by world-renowned experts with a focus on cutting-edge innovations in digital imaging products and techniques.
