The ImageNation Cinema Foundation honored actress Ruby Dee and other trailblazing members of the entertainment, business and political worlds at its ImageNation 2010
Revolution Awards Gala Reception on December 2, 2010. Georgia Congressman and civil rights hero John Lewis was scheduled to speak but was stuck in Washington to handle several crucial votes so he appeared live through Skype.
Honorees Ruby Dee, Lynn Whitfield, Debra L. Lee, Lisa Cortés, Stanley Nelson, Tom Burrell, and Iris Morales were in attendance at the 7 pm ceremony held in at The Film Society of Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater.
This year's categories included:
- Legendary Actress Ruby Dee -- the Revolution Award for Lifetime Achievement
- Congressman John Lewis -- the Revolution Award for Freedom
- BET Chairman and CEO Debra L. Lee -- the Revolution Award for Visionary Leadership in Television
- Burrell Communication Group Chairman Emeritus and author of Brainwashed Tom Burrell -- the Revolution Award for Pioneering Leadership in Media Enterprise
- Producer Lisa Cortés (Precious executive producer) -- the Revolution Award for Trailblazing in Independent Film & Music
- Filmmaker and activist Iris Morales -- the Revolution Award for Activism
Actor Jamie Hector was MC and Actress Lynn Whitfield presented the award to Cortés.
BET Networks is the presenting sponsor of the 2010 ImageNation Revolution Awards, which is produced in partnership with The Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC).
ImageNation President and Executive Director Moikgantsi Kgama and Executive Producer Gregory Gates created the Revolution Awards to give to individuals who inspire social change, blaze new trails, help foster solidarity throughout the African Diaspora, and promote or advance the arts, including Black and Latino film and culture.
The event included an advance screening of documentarian Stanley Nelson’s film Freedom Riders, which will air on PBS in 2011. The film is the powerful account of more than 400 black and white civil rights workers who transformed America over six months in 1961. The film was preceded by a introduction by filmmaker Nelson and Lewis, one of the Freedom Riders.
