Japan Film Fest Unleashes Robots & Samurai in San Fran

As part of San Francisco’s 2013 Japan Film Festival (July 27 – August 4, 2013), in conjunction with the J-POP Summit Festival (July 27 – 28, 2013), the much awaited third Neon Genesis Evangelion movie, Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo, will be having its US premiere on July 27, 2013 at the NEW PEOPLE Cinema (1746 Post St, San Francisco, CA).
Based on the groundbreaking 1995 animated television series, Neon Genesis Evangelion, this is the third movie in a four movie series that re-imagines the show, and is helmed by the original director, Hideaki Anno. The Evangelion series is known for its combination of science fiction, giant robots, and existential dread. The series has been as controversial as it is popular, and frequently sparks debates on everything from the science of a post-apocalyptic society to religion to Oedipus complexes. Think Star Trek meets Infinite Jest.
Along with Evangelion, The Japan Film Festival has several films based on different anime and manga series, including Helter Skelter, a grim descent into the mind of a plastic surgery addict, and Rurouni Kenshin, based on the hit comic series about a reformed samurai putting his bloody ways behind him.
The J-POP Summit is San Francisco’s Japantown celebration of all things Japanese, and features artists, music, cinema, activities and panel discussions. Guests to the summit include director Miwa Nishikawa (Dreams for Sale), and artist Katsuya Terada (Blood: The Last Vampire).
