Hands on E3: Madden 3DS

NFL football makes its debut on the Nintendo 3DS with the storied EA franchise MaddenMadden 3DS NFL. As EA holds an exclusive license with the NFL, no other football game has come close to the success of Madden. It is with great criticism from both football and video game fans that EA has been lacking in innovation and motivation to create newer and better football games every year. Madden on the console appears to only slightly innovate with each yearly installment.

Going into the EA booth at this year’s E3 I was expecting to see the same Madden with bad 3D graphics added on. The idea of EA producing a newly innovated game never crossed my mind, yet as I opened up the Nintendo 3DS I was bombarded with a whole new football experience.

The key mechanics are still there with classic play calling and quarterback controls. It really was the same Madden overall, but the utilization of the 3D graphics was the real game changer. The 3D on the Nintendo 3DS allowed for better quarterback control and passing selection with the ability to see the distances between the receiver and the defender. The addition of depth perception created a game that was special to play.

I found myself utilizing the 3D depth constantly when selecting receivers or defending them on the other side of the ball. The automatic play selection option makes Madden 3DS playable for anyone with any level of experience. The player’s pass or run routes were clearly marked on the screen so that any player can feel like Peyton Manning.

The 3D experience from Madden 3DS has actually raised the bar for this franchise. While the console games may seem like copies of previous year’s games, the new handheld device forced EA to rethink their franchise for a 3D world. I can’t wait to see how this game will be used in future editions of the Madden franchise overall.

Madden 3DS is out now exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS.
