The New York Photo Festival is taking place May 11 - 15, 2011 in Brooklyn, New York‛s "DUMBO" (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) district.

This year’s main exhibitions, curated by Enrico Bossan and Elisabeth Biondi are presented as Photography Now: engaged, personal, and vital. They offer distinct perspectives on a shared theme: the state of documentary photography today.

Bossan’s show, entitled Hope, features the work of young photographers who, in his words, "neither provide a faithful representation of reality nor create an illusion, but who have impressed me with their ability to capture the essential aspects of life."

Bossan grants that photography can portray the world at its bleakest, but suggests that it can also -- and, in fact, must -- remain oriented toward what lies ahead.

Curated by Elisabeth Biondi, Subjective/Objective argues that documentary photography today is remarkably vibrant and creatively thriving, despite the bleak financial picture and vanishing support from a publishing industry challenged by digital media.

Biondi has selected photographers who refract reality through their own distinct visions, often venturing into more personal visual languages. Included are:

• Jessica Hines
• Ethan Levitas
• Irina Werning
• A Yin

In addition to their respective exhibitions, Bossan and Biondi are jointly curating a room of work by photographers Shaul Schwarz and Richard Mosse that reveals the common ground in the curators’ perspectives.

A separate venue features multimedia works by artists Cia De Foto and Ben Lowy, as well as six viewing booths featuring work by such industry luminaries as MediaStorm and Panos Pictures.

Bossan and Biondi are also curating Under the Bridge: Projections of a Revolution, an extensive collection of photographs and videos documenting the revolutions in North Africa.

The show is comprised of four simultaneous projections within the recently renovated Archway under the Manhattan Bridge, underscored by music from DJ Awesome Tapes from Africa.

The show will be projected within the newly renovated Archway under the Manhattan Bridge on the night of Thursday, May 12, starting at 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Special Exhibitions include:

• Contemporary Irish Photography – Presented by the Photographer’s Gallery, Dublin, featuring the work of artists Jackie Nickerson (Faith) and Anthony Haughey (Disputed Territory).
• Hopes, Dreams, and Hard Times – featuirng the work of Alexandros Lambrovassilis, photography, and Achilles Peklaris, profiling the lives of 150 New York City inhabitants.
• Chernobyl (Curated by Johan Hallberg-Campbell) – featured Artists Antonin Kratochvil, Donald Weber and Maciek Nabrdalik. Twenty five years after the disastrous meltdown of April 26, 1986, the story of today’s living Chernobyl is told through the pictures resulting from the visits the artists made to the seemingly haunted epicenter and its environs.
• Onaeba (Japan) – Meaning "to meet", Onaeba is Japan's largest photography event, and allows anyone, amateur or pro, to enter and present their works to invited editors and curators. The work of 11 photographers is presented here.
• Capricious Presents: New York Did It to Me – Curated by Sophie Mörner, this presentation exhibits the work of 33 New York based emerging photographers.

There will be a Portfolio Review by established artists.

Slideluck Potshow XVI – Theme: Upheaval
Following last year's collaboration that broke the Guinness World Record for the Largest Potluck Dinner on Earth, this year‛s Slideluck Potshow expects to again gather hundreds of people together in celebration of food, photography and community.
