Lincoln Center Festival takes place from July 5 - August 14, 2011 at Lincoln Center, including Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Josie Robertson Plaza, as well as The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, Park Avenue Armory and Gerald W. Lynch Theater in Manhattan, New York City.

"Lincoln Center Festival began with the idea of expanding the possibilities presented at Lincoln Center and bringing to audiences something that they could not see elsewhere. This is a challenging goal in a city as culturally rich as New York, and the result has been an eclectic mix of artists and productions representing over 50 countries...", says Nigel Redden, Director of the Festival.

"Central to the Festival has been an effort to look outside the Western European canon, to broaden notions of classicism by presenting classical works from other parts of the world. And, of course, the theaters of Lincoln Center have been our main stages...."

Among the special highlights:

Lincoln Center, in a co-presentation with Park Avenue Armory and in association with The Ohio State University, presents The Royal Shakespeare Company. The Company’s 50th anniversary is being celebrated with a six-week residency at the Armory, complete with their own theater, a replica of their home space at Stratford-Upon-Avon.

The five plays being presented are:

• As You Like It, directed by Michael Boyd
• Julius Caesar, directed by Lucy Bailey
• King Lear, directed by David Farr
• Romeo and Juliet, directed by Rupert Goold
• The Winter’s Tale, directed by Farr

Two programs that are part of the RSC’s children’s education program Stand Up for Shakespeare are shortened (but not diluted) versions of

• The Comedy of Errors
• Hamlet (directed by Brother/Sister Plays author Tarell Alvin McCraney, who is the RSC’s writer in residence)
  
  
• U.S. premiere of A Magic Flute, director Peter Brook’s adaptation of Mozart’s opera and his final creation as Artistic Director of Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord
• irrepressible Brazilian artist Tom Zé in a rare U.S. concert appearance
• the renowned Mariinsky (Kirov) Ballet at the Met Opera House, featuring the Mariinsky Orchestra. A Festival co-presentation with the Metropolitan Opera, the three programs are:
  • Anna Karenina (U.S. premiere)
  • The Little Humpbacked Horse, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky to music by Rodion Shchedrin (U.S. premiere)
• a double-bill of Alberto Alonso’s Carmen Suite, to Shchedrin’s arrangement of Bizet’s score, and George Balanchine’s Symphony in C, also with music by Bizet.
• David Michalek’s large-scale, outdoor video installation, Portraits in Dramatic Time, holds free showings each evening from 8:45 p.m.-11:45 p.m. on Josie Robertson Plaza
• Merce Fair is a day of performances, workshops, video and art installations celebrating the artistry of choreographer Merce Cunningham
• Amon Miyamoto directs the U.S. Premiere of The Temple of the Golden Pavilion based on Yukio Mishima’s novel
• The Druid Theatre Company of Galway, Ireland performs Seán O’Casey’s classic anti-war drama The Silver Tassie, directed by Tony Award-winner Garry Hynes
• Royal Danish Opera offers the U.S. Premiere of Poul Ruders’ opera Selma Jezková, based on Lars von Trier’s original screenplay for the film Dancer in the Dark; and Royal Danish Orchestra performs an orchestral concert and an evening of chamber music
• The Cleveland Orchestra with music director Franz Welser-Möst (winner of the Bruckner Medal of Honor) focus on the music of Anton Bruckner:
  • (R)evolution, Symphonies Nos. 5, 7, 8 (the original 1887 version)
  • Symphony No. 9, juxtaposed with works by John Adams, including his Violin Concerto played by Leila Josefowicz
• Film Screening – Rodion Shchedrin’s The Enchanted Wanderer, an HD screening of the Mariinsky Opera production.
