NYCxDESIGN: A Week of the Arts in Practice

 

NYCxDESIGN is New York City’s annual celebration of design taking place May 11–23, 2018. The event celebrates a world of design and showcases over a dozen design disciplines through events taking place across the city’s five boroughs.

NYCxDesign features events based around architecture, education, tech, graphic design, film/TV, theatre, interior design, and much more. Events and exhibitions will be happening at the Museum of Art and Design (2 Columbus Circle), the SVA Theatre (333 W 23rd St.), and the New York School of Interior Design Gallery (161 East 69th Street), with events including art exhibitions, workshops, lectures, fashion shows, panels, and more!

A World of Dealers at the ADAA Art Show

 

Assembling the top galleries from New York and America, the ADAA Art Show at the Park Avenue Armory (643 Park Ave, New York, NY 10065) from February 28 to March 4th. The show opens with a keynote speech from Christiane Fischer (President and CEO, AXA Art Americas Corporation) entitled The Value of "Dead" Art: Afterlives of Damaged Works." Also a performance by artist Wang Dongling.

MoCCA Fest 2017: Indie Comics New & Old from Around the World

What started as a small convention geared towards indie comics and ‘zines, MOCCA Fest (named after the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art, but is now operated by The Society of Illustrators), now touts itself as a multimedia event spanning comic books, webcomics animation, artists, and cartoonists. Running April 1 and 2 at Metropolitan West (639 W 46th St., NY NY), MoCCA Fest attracts 400 artists/exhibitors and features fresh new talent as well as some great comic pros.

Special guests include French comic author Blutch, known for his cinematic style. Paper Girls artist Cliff Chiang and SVA grad that brings a punk sensibility to superheroes, Becky Cloonan, will be on hand. Gene Luen Yang,  author of the groundbreaking books American Born Chinese and Boxers & Saints returns to MoCCA. Somewhere between comic, tragic, grotesque, and beautiful, the work of award winning artist Drew Friedman has appeared in Raw, Weirdo, American Splendor, Heavy Metal, The New York Times,  among many others, and will also be a guest of honor at MoCCA. Rounding out the special guests is British comics veteran and V for Vendetta artist, David Lloyd.

The 2017 NYC Armory Show: Art in the 21st Century

 

This past Wednesday, March 1st, marked the annual VIP debut of NYC’s premiere art fair, the Armory Show. The grand showcase of the top art works of the 20th and 21st century took place in the fair’s usual home, Pier 92 & 94.

Some of the highlights included an immersive virtual reality display, which combined both physical and virtual to stunning effect. Continuing the technological theme, an interactive phone charging booth invited viewers in to be filmed as the texted with the artist, namely Rachel Lee Hovnanian, with the Leila Heller Gallery.

   
Of course there were plenty of conventional works to delight and inspire. These three pieces particularly  garnered much attention from the VIP guests.

Lastly, these structural 2D and 3D pieces from the local Marianne Boesky Gallery, placed near the entrance at Pier 94, delighted the VIP crowd with their bold colors and contradicting shapes.
