Spearheaded by Tony Award-winning producer Ken Davenport, the Rave Theater Festival is a platform for emerging artists in the theater. The inaugural Rave Theater Festival will take place at Teatro SEA and Teatro LaTea Theatres at The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center (107 Suffolk Street, NYC) with a selection of 20 shows spanning plays, musicals, family-friendly shows, and cross-disciplinary projects.
In Joshua Turchin’s The Perfect Fit, Alexandra, a driven child actor with a powerful voice, grows concerned that she is growing too old to play a child and too young to play an adult. After being cast in a musical, she is sabotaged by a vindictive stage parent who would do anything for her daughter to succeed. Alexandra wants to give up her dreams of being a musical star, but her best friend Jake, a budding composer, and her mother, Annie, teach Alexandra to move forward. It is through the heartbreak and defeat that she faces that allow her to find her real perfect fit.
Training Wheels, from Robin Bradford, is about a long-married Lesbian couple, Penny and Katherine, suffer from a gradual breakdown of their relationship. When Penny discovers Katherine’s infidelity, with a man no less, the couple seek marital counseling. Deeply felt emotions force them to reevaluate their lives and their lifestyles.
Doppelgänger, written by Craig Donnelly, follows social media star Max Henderson, who dies in a prank gone wrong. Now his “team” must convince his doppelgänger to take his place.

NY Indie Theatre Film Festival Returns for Third Year

Celebrating theatrical works that break off into new and exciting territory, the third annual NY Indie Theatre Festival returns to NYC with premieres and special performances. Running February 8 to 11 at the New Ohio Theatre (154 Christopher St.), the NYITFF is also produced by the New Ohio Theatre, a two-time Obie Award winning establishment.
The festival opens with the premiere of Poor Behavior, a dark, dysfunctional comedy that marks the film directorial debut by Theresa Rebeck (upcoming spy thriller 355, Broadway’s Bernhardt/Hamlet, NBC’s “Smash”), based on her play of the same name. Ms. Rebeck will participate in a talkback after the screening, moderated by Marc Stuart Weitz, New Ohio Theatre’s Producing Director.
This year’s lineup includes 14 world and New York premieres, including:
- Hey Charlie, directed by Shaun Irons, starring Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich)
- But This Is How It Will End, written & directed by Amy Epstein, starring Steven Rattazzi (The Venture Bros., Broadway’s Indecent).

Origin's 1st Irish Theatre Festival Brings Contemporary Plays of Ireland to NYC

Dedicated to promoting contemporary Irish plays and theatre, Origin’s 1st Irish Theatre Festival comes to NYC featuring the work of 15 Irish playwrights. Shown in venues across NYC, these productions are imported or organized and produced in New York with participating producers are Fishamble and Gúna Nua (Dublin) Sole Purpose Theatre Co. (Derry), The Lyric (Belfast), Cork City Ballet, and local companies Fat Violet, Gire & Gimbel, NY Irish Center, and Origin Theatre Company.
In competition during the festival is the American premiere of John Breen’s celebrated drama “Alone It Stands”, which revisits the 1978 David vs. Goliath win of Limerick’s Munster’s rugby club over New Zealand’s All Blacks. Sole Purpose Theatre Co. in Derry, Northern Ireland, brings the American premiere of Patricia Byrne’s “Blinkered,” which delves into the taboo subject of suicide among teens. New York-based Fat Violet Theater presents “The Smuggler,” the American premiere of Galway-born Ronan Noone’s new one-man comedy, featuring Mick Mellamphy as Noone sends his protagonists on dark treks of self-discovery.
Out of competition is the Breaking Ground Series, in which six Irish writers respond to the international theme of migration. A reading of six brand new short plays by Brona Crehan, Michael Fitzpatrick, Rosemary Jenkinson, Honor Molloy, Sarah Street, and Sadhbh Walshe.
