SoundTrack Cologne Examines Music in Film & Games

It is fascinating to see what an impression video game music has made on people over the decades. You can talk to someone that claims to have no interest in videogames or knowledge of music, but they can instantly recognize the the jaunty theme from Super Mario Bros. A Russian folk-song, Korobeinki, is now forever associated with falling blocks. Not to mention there has been a rise in bands that emulate the music of video games from the 80’s and 90’s, and even an entire rock operas composed based on stories from games. So SoundTrack Cologne (November 21 - 24, 2013, various locations), now in its 10th installment, celebrates music in games and movies, which propel us ever forward to the controller or to the box office.

Along with assembling experts and professionals that compose music for the film industry, SoundTrack Cologne examines the importance of music in gaming. In the panel series Composing For Games, Jason Graves (Tomb Raider, Deadspace), Greg Edmonson (Uncharted) and Knut Avenstroup-Haugen (Age of Conan) discuss their careers and the challenges of composing music for games and digital media. Graves, Haugen, and Edmonson will also be running a series of workshops individually

Following the talks, the Kölner Philharmonie, the WDR Rundfunkorchester, along with the band Spark, will put on a concert featuring songs from games including The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy. For those of you in Cologne unable to get a ticket because it’s sold out, or those of you living in another country, the show will be broadcast on the WDR Livestream.

Besides celebrating music in games, Sountrack Cologne host the See the Sound Festival of Films about Music, and screen films including: The Punk Singer, Trains of Thought, and Kidd Life.

SoundTrack Cologne embodies the powerful sway that music can have in media. Whether it’s a catchy tune that motivates us to jump on another turtle, or a swelling orchestral score in a film.
