Newport Folk Festival 2011

The 52nd annual Newport Folk Festival is taking place July 30 - 31, 2011 at Fnmf-Tshirtort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island.

Started in 1959 as a counterpart to the Newport Jazz Festival, The Newport Folk Festival features music ranging from folk, blues, country, bluegrass and folk rock to alternative country, indie folk and folk punk.

The Newport Folk Festival has served true musical omnivores that crave innovation yet appreciate tradition. This year‛s Festival continues to build on its historic past by featuring emerging young artists alongside some of folk music’s most venerable names.

This year‛s Festival also introduces The First Annual Newport Folk Backstage Benefit BBQ on Saturday, July 30. The Low Anthem will be performing along with fellow Rhode Islander John McCauley of Deer Tick and Middle Brother, plus surprise guests.

NOFO Rock & Folk Fest 2011

The second annual NOFO Rock and Folk Fest takes place July 30 - 31, 2011 in the fields at nofo-NAtlasPeconic Bay Winery in Cutchogue, Long Island, New York.

NOFO‛s emphasis is on supporting local musicians, as it also welcomes world-famous acts.

"What makes us so unique is we're the only festival that really embraces the essence of the East End, North and South Fork," says Josh Horton, the fest's co-producer.

"We're the only festival that . . . embraces great music along with showcasing and making available locally grown produce and other items that are specific to the East End."

This festival is also very family friendly.

"When we created this festival, we wanted it to be someplace that you would feel comfortable to bring children and walk around," says Jim Silver, the general manager of Peconic Bay Winery. "The grounds are very gorgeous, and it's wide open space, so they can have fun."

The festivities kick off Saturday morning with Fam Jam, featuring Grammy-nominee Brady Rymer & The Little Band That Could.

Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival 2011

The 16th annual Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival runs July 21 – 24, 2011, at Seaside gvm-ECostelloPark in Bridgeport, Connecticut. With four days of music and over 50 artists, Vibes is expecting 45,000 total attendees, of whom 15,000 will be camping overnight.

Latino Cultural Festival NY 2011

Queens Theatre in the Park (QTP) is presenting the Chase 2011 Latino Cultural Festival,lcfq-Oyuoro2 its own quinceañera, from July 20 - 24, 2011 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Flushing, Queens, New York

Queens Theatre in the Park founded the Latino Cultural Festival in 1997 with the Latin America Cultural Center of Queens to celebrate the contributions of Latin American artists to New York's cultural life. QTP highlights Spanish, African and Caribbean influences, presents rich folk traditions, and spotlights a range of popular and cutting edge artists. Many of the participating Central and South American artists now make the Festival their exclusive NYC engagement.

The Chase 2011 Latino Cultural Festival is sponsored by Chase, El Diario, conEdison, Delta, and Time Warner Cable.

The Festival kicks off Wednesday, July 20, 2011 with Oyu Oro Afro-Cuban Folklore Dance Ensemble, in Fiesta Cubana. This celebration of the diverse spectrum of Cuban dance and music forms is performed by Oyu Oro and acclaimed Cuban guest musicians Pedrito Martinez and Roman Diaz, along with internationally renowned folklore artist Danys Perez, "La Mora".

directed by Beto Gómez (Mexico)
This documentary presents the women who have contributed to the development of Mexican music. Gomez explores the struggles and successes of Chavela Vargas, Lila Downs, Eugenia León, Astrid Hadad, La Negra Graciana and Iraida Noriega, and "illuminates what is vital in modern Mexican music."

The Open Mic Night provides a platform for poets, singer-songwriters, and spoken-word artists to showcase their talents in front of a live audience. The host and MC of the evening is America's leading spoken word artist, La Bruja.

Los Chantas Tango Quartet will host a traditional Milonga (lively form of social tango dance) in collaboration with professional dancers. A half-hour crash course for guests dancing tango for the first time starts the evening. Following the Milonga, Los Chantas will perform with music by Sergio Reyes.

Clave - the Key: A Rhythmic Journey from Africa to the New World
Multiple Grammy Award-nominated drummer/percussionist/arranger/composer "and bandleader Bobby Sanabria uses the five-beat rhythm of the clave (the rhythmic pattern and unifying principle of Cuban son, rumba and contemporary salsa) as the key to unlock the roots of Afro-Cuban music and show its presence in the music of present day United States."

Tola y Maruja, the "Colombian comedy duo, formed in 1990 by journalist and cartoonist Carlos Mario Gallego (Tola) and writer Sergio Valencia Rincón (Maruja), mocks Columbian politics and society in the form of two old paisa (from Medellin City) ladies. This performance is in Spanish only.
