Mr. Tastee Has Been Found on the Satellite of Love: Cinefamily's Everything is Festival III

cinefamily pete posterCinefamily’s Everything is Festival III: The Domnation (August 19 - 28, 2012) in Los Angeles (various locations) is “the world’s greatest (and only) gonzo convention for found footage collectors, alternative comedy, and experimental artists.“ A strange assembly of bizzarre amateure films, lost odities, and a few appearances from some 90's paragons of pop-culture.

The opening ceremony on August 18 features Mystery Science Theater 3000 stars and writers Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, J. Elvis Weinstein and Mary Jo Pehl heckling through the 1973 film, The Doll Squad. Joel will also be part of a special Cinefamily Show & Tell on August 20.

Additional events include:

  • An Evening with Cynthia Rothrock
  • G.L.O.W.: The Story of The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling
  • The 100 Most Outrageous Action Scenes
  • Everything is Terrible! Presents “The Rise and Fall of God”
  • Star Wars: Uncut

On August 28, 2012, Cinefamily, in conjunction with the FYF Fest, will be holding a special Pete and Pete Reunion at The Orpheum Theatre Los Angeles (842 South Broadway Los Angeles).  Cinefamily touts that “virtually the entire population of Wellsville (from its creators to its residents)” will be attending, along with a special reunion performance of the band Polaris (singers of the show’s nigh incomprehensible theme song).

Every generation has its own TV series that it champions as “groundbreaking” or “subversive” or whatever other buzzwords people like to use to make crap seem important. But for one brief, shining moment (1993 to 1996, to be specific) one show took the children of the 90’s to some place strange and wonderful. That show was Pete and Pete.

I could write a dissertation on the simple joys Pete and Pete espoused, like sharing plaque candy with a boy you hardly talk to, being friends with The Strongest Man in the World, confronting mysteriously ringing telephones, but honestly, it’s the sort of thing you just have to see for yourself. Only two of the three seasons were ever released on DVD (which is a shame, since Patty Hearst had an inspired performance as the nicest housewife in the world in the third season), but even if you didn’t grow up with the show, I urge you to give it a look. It at least has aged better than Hey Dude.

Cinefamily’s Everything is Festival III is a cinema event for the eclectic, the strange, the nostalgic, and also, those that appreciate funny shit.
