Starry Nights In Zinco Jazz Club; Mexico City Hotspot for New, Established Acts

When was the last time you visited Mexico City? If the answer is, roughly a decade ago, lb-ZincoLogoyou're in for a surprise.

A spit away from the concert halls, congressional palace, esplanades and museums of El Centro Histórico, the dusty downtown has since been gussied up. Cafés, night clubs, boutiques, galleries -- even health food stores light up its new pedestrian zone.

There's enough bustle to make a New Yorker feel at home, if home is also Madrid. Out of the dull choke of civic business now rises life.

The revitalization campaign has been largely bankrolled by Carlos Slim, whose estimated fortune of $74 billion makes him about the wealthiest person in the world. So it's only fitting that one of the hottest entertainment offerings around is a jazz joint housed in the former Banco Mexicano.

Tucked away in the bank's security vaults, the Zinco Jazz Club lures top domestic and international acts who are as charmed by the acoustics as by the tuned-in crowds. On Thursday nights you might find the likes of saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera, conceptual rock band the Twin Tones, Leo Corona's Latin Jazz All Stars or Todd Clouser's A Love Electric. Emerging talents such as fusion band I Funk and El Soul also showcase their smooth licks in this swank subterranean lair.lb-ZincoJazzClub

To match the Art Deco atmosphere and wash down light snacks, Zinco's menu serves up all manner of scotches and bourbons. Mojitos are another house specialty.

After a night of living la vida loca, you might wonder how safe it is outside the club. Tranquilo! You can't sling an iguana in El Bajocentro without hitting a cop, and Zinco patrons say they stroll around all hours of the day and night sin problema.

Zinco was rated as one of the ”25 most exciting new nightspots in the world” by Condé Nast Traveler. Unless you plan to dance the night away, reserve a seat in advance.
