Assembling a unique amalgamation of minds from the worlds of entertainment, literature, the arts, and culture, The New Yorker Festival (October 5 – 7, 2012) addresses the forefront of art and culture.
Spread throughout Manhattan (locations include The Frick Collection (1 East 70th St.), the South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton St.), and the Gramercy Theater (127 East 23rd St.), among others), the NYF is split into several categories with various speakers.
Fiction Night/Discussion Among Writers brings together:
Tales Out Of School assembles past and present writers at the New Yorker to discuss what it’s like working at the presigous magazine (how modest).
Conversations with Music brings together musicians Norah Jones and the Grammy-nominated Punch Brothers with New Yorker’s music critics to discuss their craft.
Along with one-on-one discussions are various panels covering a broad range of subjects including sitcom writing, female voters, and analysis of the works of David Foster Wallace.
On Saturday, October 6th, at the SVA Theatre (333 West 23rd Street), there will be a special sneak preview of Cloud Atlas, the new film from Tom Tykwer and Andy and Lana Wachowski based on the novel by David Mitchell. I may be wrong and Cloud Atlas could turn out great, but I get this feeling they said, “Let’s take Malick’s Tree of Life, but throw in some ham-fisted romance and robots to make it palatable to mass audiences.”
And it just wouldn’t be about The New Yorker without bringing up their captioned cartoons. The Cartoon Caption Games pits live contestants to caption a cartoon themed around dogs and are then judged by hosts Robert Mankoff, Harry Bliss, George Booth, and Kim Warp.
The New Yorker Festival is one of the hotly awaited events in Manhattan and tickets get snatched up fast (I futilely tried to see Haruki Murakami in 2011), so check out the lineup and try to get in while you still have a ghost of a chance.
