Philip Glass Presents Days and Nights Festival

The Days and Nights Festival is being held August 19 - September 4, 2011 at the Hidden days-logoValley Theatre in Carmel Valley and the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, California.

Established by Philip Glass, one of America’s best-known composers, this new annual summer festival presents a series of performances across music, dance, theater, poetry and film in collaboration with Hidden Valley Music Seminars (Peter Meckel, General Director) and the Henry Miller Library (Magnus Toren, Director).

"The first season reflects keystones in Glass’s career in terms of the selection of works and performers, while future seasons will delve ever further into the evolution of the arts across time and space."

Highlights are:

Drive-in Movie Night – "The Festival recreates a classic drive-in movie theater nestled between the beautiful hills of Carmel Valley, complete with large outdoor screen and local food vendors." Viewers can watch:

  • Kundun, Martin Scorsese‛s 1997 film about the early years of Tibet's 14th Dalai Lama
  • Tabloid, the new documentary from Errol Morris about Joyce McKinney

An Evening of Poetry at Henry Miller Library – Some of California’s leaddays-john-saoriing poets will be accompanied by Philip Glass and the YOA: Orchestra of the Americas string quartet. Poets scheduled to appear are:

  • Jerry Quickley
  • Eleni Sikelianos
  • Francesco Levato
  • Maria Teutsch

40 Year Retrospective with the Philip Glass Ensemble – Philip Glass and the Philip Glass Ensemble present a collection of work spanning Mr. Glass’s career. Included are highlights from Glassworks and Einstein on the Beach as well as scores for the film Koyanisqqatsi and The Truman Show.

Evenings of chamber music

Theatre presentations by John Moran…and his neighbor, Saori

Dance Performances – Molissa Fenley and Dancers perform brand new dance pieces, with Philip Glass on piano. Ms. Fenley will also be conducting dance workshops, as well as open rehearsals.

A screening of Dracula, the 1931 classic film, at the Henry Miller Library
