The World Science Festival presents a series of live events and talks with internationally renowned scientists, thinkers, and innovators, exploring the very edge of understanding. Running May 30th to June 2 at Gerald W Lynch Theater at John Jay College, these talks look at space, AI, and beyond.
Beyond The Stars: A Journey to the Edge of Space and Time features author Brian Greene in a multimedia look at key moments of our universe’s history, from the big bang to the rise of stars, black holes, life, and consciousness. The Arts in the Age of Artificial Intelligence features filmmakers, authors, and scientist exploring the place AI has in human creative endeavors. Quantum Computing: The Vanguard of Technology examines quantum computation — leveraging quantum physics to revolutionize computational power – as renowned leaders explore the basics of quantum computers, the state-of-play in building them, and the wonders that await and dangers that lurk in a world replete with quantum computers. This is a sampling of the events in the series.

Internet Week is being held on June 6 - 13, 2011 at the Metropolitan Pavilion plus other 
venues around New York City.
Noting that Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently called for New York City to be "the #1 digital city in the world," Internet Week New York chair David-Michel Davies said "the festival’s line-up reflects how the city is well-positioned to make that goal come true."
"There has been a groundswell of energy and activity in the New York technology industry over the past few years," said Davies. "The festival has become a draw for people looking to exchange ideas and explore and experience where the Internet might be taking us next."

Visual Character Re-defined Through This Weekend and Beyond

Sometimes the visual dynamic of New York, and Manhattan in particular, can be too much --
too much a jumble, or a clash of priorities and styles, a cavalcade of dissonance. But sometimes, something comes into view that re-orders the environment so much that it both jars the visual ecology and redefines it.
That happened yesterday when I saw three large brightly colored metal shipping containers stamped CHARACTER PROJECT on the front and back sitting in various public spaces in Manhattan.
Plopped down into high-traffic public pavilions, these boxes captured the attention and altered the impact of the space they occupied. But because they were there as pop-up movie theaters, meant to feature eight shorts commissioned by the USA Network and RSA Films (Ridley and Tony Scott's company), they did more than visually affect the street dynamic -- they became site-specific gallery spaces as well.
