The 64th edition of Festival del film Locarno / Locarno Film Festival takes place August 3 - 13, 2011 at Piazza Grande, Auditorium FEVI, La Sala, L'Altra Sala, Ex*Rex, Teatro Kursaal, Rialto and Palavideo Theaters in Locarno, Switzerland.
Founded in 1946, the Festival del film Locarno is one of the oldest film festivals in the world, held in a Swiss-Italian town right in the heart of Europe -- a fitting location for the world capital of auteur cinema.
The Festival is"the essential rendez-vous for auteurs, observers and key players in world cinema" and strives to "limit the number of films selected, in order to guarantee maximum visibility" of those selections.
The seventh annual Rural Route Film Festival takes place Aug 3 - 7, 2011 at Museum of the Moving Image, Brooklyn Grange Farm and Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York.
"The Rural Route Film Festival was created to highlight works that deal with rural people and places. ... Whether it be a documentary about an organic turnip farm in West Virginia, a fictional backpacking drama set in Peru, or a personal/experimental work about life in a small town in Wisconsin, we want to see and hear what you have to say."
"Rural Route is an adventurous film festival with independent, global films that explore our relationship to the world," said the Museum’s Chief Curator David Schwartz.
"Many of the films this year explore, in very human terms, the ongoing conflict between economic factors and the health of our environment. We are delighted to host Rural Route, and to be working with Festival director Alan Webber."
A special free screening at Socrates Sculpture Park kicks off the festival. The Straight Story (1999), directed by David Lynch, stars Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, Harry Dean Stanton. An old man buys a John Deere tractor and drives from Iowa to Wisconsin to see his estranged, ailing brother.
The 7th Annual Topanga Film Festival (TFF) runs July 28 - 31, 2011 at the Topanga Canyon Gallery, Topanga Elementary School, Church of Cinema and other venues in Topanga Canyon, located in the Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles, California.
The Topanga Film Festival "is dedicated to empowering, informing and interconnecting all generations of storytellers who wish to pioneer a new era of global trans-format content. TFF endeavors to promote culture, community, and collaboration through the creative process of storytelling."
"In the last five years, [we have seen] a surge of corporations utilizing the expertise of neuromarketing firms in order to technically understand what makes their workforce tick. The entertainment industry is no exception. In fact, it is an ardent participant in these endeavors.
NewFest NY 2011, The 23rd Annual New York City LGBT Film Festival, New York‛s premiere Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender film festival, screens July 21 - 28, 2011 at The Walter Reade Theater at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in Manhattan, as well as the School of Visual Arts Theater in Chelsea, and at Cinema Village in Greenwich Village, New York City as well as several other venues.
This year, NewFest presents their first annual NewFest Visionary Award, and the recipient is legendary film producer Christine Vachon. "Vachon was instrumental in the development of the New Queer Cinema movement, producing such classics as Todd Haynes' Poison, Tom Kalin's Swoon and the lesbian favorite Go Fish (from NewFest board member Rose Troche)."
Vachon will be present at the Walter Reade Theater to accept her award prior to the start of the Opening Night film, and again on Friday afternoon when she leads a special industry discussion panel.
