Gen Art Film Festival 2011 - NY Edition

The 16th Anniversary of the Gen Art Film Festival is being held June 8 - 14, 2011 at the gaf-BeginnersVisual Arts Theatre in Manhattan, New York City.

The Gen Art Film Festival has long established its reputation as one of New York’s most celebrated film festivals showcasing emerging talent. With a unique format, the Gen Art Film Festival premieres one feature film and one short film from promising filmmakers for seven consecutive nights, each followed by an after-party at a New York hotspot.

The Festival allows film lovers to experience a movie premiere like a true insider. All tickets provide admission to both the premiere and after-party with the cast and filmmakers, allowing for a fun and interactive experience between audiences, filmmakers and media.

Hero Complex Film Festival 2011

The Los Angeles Times’ 2nd Hero Complex Film Festival screens June 9 - 12, 2011 at hcf-BeattyTracyThe Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood, California.

The festival opens with Warren Beatty and his acclaimed take on the famed 1930’s gumshoe, Dick Tracy, along with a screening of the 1990 film which Beatty directed and produced. (Beatty has confirmed that he is working on the sequel to the movie.)

Science fiction’s most beloved franchises get a past-and-future showcase:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan screens with director Nicholas Meyer in attendance
Star Trek 2009 screens with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and producer Damon Lindelof on hand to discuss the reboot and its upcoming sequel.

On Superman Day, director Richard Donner provides behind-the-scenes perspective on the legendary shooting of Superman and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut.

Also making a special appearance to discuss Superman is Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and famed comic book writer.

The festival also features

  • a free weekend matinee of The Incredibles
  • select footage from this summer’s action-packed comedy Cars 2. Attendees will get to chat with supervising animator Dave Mullins about the making of the film.

The Los Angeles Times’ award-winning Hero Complex debuted in 2008 as the first site by a major mainstream news outlet dedicated to genre-based film, TV and publishing projects.

Hero Complex has gone on to become a wildly popular must-read for all things "geek" and hosts numerous events throughout the year, including a new, soon-to-be-announced Screening Series of upcoming releases, a dedicated area for comic and graphic novels at the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, and an influential presence at Comic-Con.

The Hero Complex Film Festival is being presented in association with USA Network, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and TNT’s Falling Skies, a 2-hour series premiere event June 19th, 9pm.

Stranger Than Fiction: Summer Edition

This year, Stranger Than Fiction Documentary Series (STF) presents its first Sstf-Senna2ummer edition on Tuesday nights from June 7 - August 9, 2011 at the IFC Center in Manhattan, New York.

After 17 successful years, the weekly documentary film series hosts, Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen, decided to add a summer series.

"This is the first time STF has presented a summer season, expanding from our slates in fall, winter and spring," said Artistic Director Thom Powers. "We've tried to capture the spirit of the season with films full of adventure and discovery."

"I'm especially excited about two nights of rarely screened classics from the 1960s," said Powers. "These are films never released on home video that shouldn't be missed."

Brooklyn Film Festival 2011

The Brooklyn Film Festival (BFF) is screening June 3 - 12, 2011 at indieScreen and the bff-BattleBrooklyn Heights Cinema in  Brooklyn, New York. BFF features a record number of 36 New York Citybased film directors with over a dozen projects shot in Brooklyn.

This year‛s theme is "Plot". "With Plot, the Festival intends to take a snapshot at the most controversial issues of our times while analyzing the evolution of plotting both in real life and in story telling. The focus [is] on the political and cultural behavior of individuals, groups, regions, and countries. The issues range from corporate takeovers to wars, from abusive relationships to the role of government in modern society."
