The 42nd edition of HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter is being held January 17-21, 2011 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Asia's largest and the world's second largest fashion event.
Fashion Week runs concurrently with the 9th edition of HKTDC World Boutique, which displays clothing, accessories and lifestyle products from around the globe and hosts the Hong Kong Fashion Extravaganza. The exclusive event welcomes four internationally celebrated fashion designers: Japan's Keita Maruyama, Korea's Doii Lee, China's Alex Wang and Hong Kong's Barney Cheng. (Wang and Cheng have been worn celebrities including Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh and Michelle Williams.)
This Fair is made up of 11 theme zones. The two largest are Garment Mart, which showcases “reasonably priced high-volume fashion” and Fashion Gallery, which features “collections of higher quality and outstanding design from 275 exhibitors.” Emporium de Mode presents fashion collections that emphasize unique design and detail. The other zones are:
World of Fashion Accessories
Intimate Wear
Infant & Children’s Wear
Bridal & Evening Wear
Fabrics & Yarn
Sewing Supplies
Trade Services
Testing, Certification & Inspection
This year, something new is being added: “sputtering technology,” a form of etching. The experimental project, Functional and Decorative Textile Products through Sputtering Technology, “aims to examine the properties of textile products treated with the newly developed sputtering technology and to develop innovative metallized textile products for high-end garments and accessories.” The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel will display a collection of outfits made from metallized fabrics utilizing this technology.
Around 25 countries and regions will be hosting pavilions, the largest being from Mainland China with over 800 exhibitors emphasizing garments and accessories. Other countries include India, Japan, Macau, Spain and Taiwan. The Japan Pavilion comprises a selection of edgy fashion brands and quality fabrics presented by tokyoeye.
Fashion Week also features a series of topical seminars, including a forecast of 2011-2012 Fall/Winter fashion influences. The Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest returns to spotlight a new generation of Hong Kong design talent.
