Not so long ago, a gathering of curators meant tweedy, monacled art snobs holding forth in nasal tones. On September 5, 2012, the first annual Curators Conference will take a bow featuring fashionista and lifestyle royalty.
Even its time and the place scream chic: just prior to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York (September 6-13) and that cathedral of cinema, Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater.
Presented by online channel Portable, the day-long gasconade will showcase the work and ideas of top curators and creators across fashion, film, design, music and technology. One such cultural light is fashion filmmaker and photographer Gia Coppola, whose clients include Diane Von Furstenberg, Rodarte, Zac Posen and such labels as Opening Ceremony and Wren. The 20-something grandaughter of Francis and Eleanor and niece of Sophia and Roman will discuss the fledgling art form of fashion videos.
Other speakers include:
- Susie Bubble, Founder of fashion blog Style Bubble
- Philippe Von Borries, Co-founder of fashion site Refinery29
- Chris Corrado, Director of fashion and lifestyle tradeshow Capsule
- Warren Fu, music video director and curator (The Strokes, Daft Punk, Mark Ronson, Q-Tip, The Killers)
- Soraya Darabi, online curator and Founder of food blog Foodspotting
- Josh Rubin, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of innovation site Cool Hunting
- Carrie Scott, Director of art site SHOWstudio Shop
- Rodrigo Calvo, Managing Director of travel publisher and booking service Mr & Mrs Smith
Whether in commerce or art, “curator” has become a catchword of the digital era. Galleries, museums and cinema have long tapped arbiters of style and taste to craft a narrative, convey a message and create waves. As content producers and consumers continue to multiply exponentially, the skills of curatorship are increasingly called on to generate navigable, cogent online experiences.
At the Curators Conference, tastemakers will toss a wink to the past as they strut the cultural runway toward upcoming trends.
The forum is designed for professionals and creatives from the fashion industry as well as from retail, design, media, film, art and technology, among other convergent sectors. Speaker bios and registration are available at http://curatorsconference.com
