With the advent of smart-phones and social networking, photos may inhabit less physical space these days, but they contain a social currency and are traded amongst people now more than ever. Luminance: The Intersection of Business, Technology, Culture & Photography (September 12 -13, 2012) at the BMCC TriBeCa Performing Arts Center (199 Chambers Street) is a two-day conference that brings together experts, photographers, CEOs, authors, to discuss the evolution photography has achieved.
Over two dozen speakers will conduct a series of 20 minute TED-style talks, followed by a Q&A session. These talks address skepticism in an era of digital photography, the moral implications of using Photoshop to alter appearances, the use of photography on international space stations, and the evolution of image recognition software.
Speakers include:
Zack Arias
Scott Belsky
Jen Bekman
Leila Boujnane
Sara Friedlander
Taylor Jones
Robert Seale
Before the festival kicks off, there will be a series of workshops where you can get hands on experience with new photographic technology on September 11 at Root Drive-In Studios (443 West 18th Street). Luminance combines art, business, and philosophy with the world of photography and is a great event for people interested in learning more about the ever-expanding and changing world of photography.
