New York’s biggest independent comic convention is here to usher in spring. The SI MoCCA Fest runs March 16 and 17 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea with zines, comix, graphic novels, manga, bande dessinee, and a few comic books too, as legions of artists set up tables showing their risographed and stapled wares.
The festival’s special guests include:
And many more!
Along with the plethora of indie comics to peruse, there’s also panel discussion such as Gender Trips, which looks at three artists whose work critiques, subverts and satirizes Western gender expectations: Corinne Halbert (Acid Nun), Beth Hetland (Tender), and Maybelline Skvortzoff (Dirty Panties). Made in New York is a discussion between Josh Bayer, E. A. Bethea, Juliette Collet, Austin English, Angela Fanche and John Vasquez Mejias on the vibrant comics scene of NYC. Professional Development: Financial Survival Kit offers advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and artists looking to not getting eaten alive.
There will also be an after party at The Society of Illustrators (128 East 63rd Street, between Lexington and Park Avenues) on Saturday, March 16th. Tickets must be purchased for this in advance, and is a separate event.
