The 10th Annual New York Korean Film Festival

Korea has been churning out some of the most remarkable films in recent years, crkorean-film-Sunny-tooeating a fervor not seen since Hong Kong cinema was introduced to American VHS players in the early '90s.  

From February 24 - 26, 2012, the BAMcinematek will be holding the 10th New York Korean Film Festival (NYKFF). For 10 years, NYKFF has been bringing some of the best films of the Korean millennial new wave to New York, including the much lauded Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) retrospective at BAM in 2005.

Ever since Oldboy hit the cinema scene in 2003, on up to I Saw the Devil in 2010, Korean cinema has shown no sign of slowing down, both shocking and drawing strong audience reactions that have created an interest in Korean cinema that has spawned several film series and festivals.

This year’s festival features seven films, two of which are making their New York premieres: Kang Woo-suk’s Glove and Lee Hyun-seung’s Hindsight.

A hot-tempered former professional baseball player is sent to the countryside to coach a team of hearing impaired players.

Hindsight / Poo-reun-so-geum

Veteran filmmaker Lee Hyun-seung transcends the crime genre in this film about retired mob boss Duheon who has hopes of making a fresh start as a restaurant owner and enrolls in cooking class, where finds himself drawn to a woman with a past.

On a special weekend release from prison, where she’s serving time for killing her abusive husband, Anna ventures to Seattle to attend her mother’s funeral. On the bus, she meets Hoon, a "companion for hire" on the run.

Upon hearing news of his father’s death, Ryu Hae-guk travels to an isolated village, where he soon realizes that the increasingly threatening villagers are hiding something from him.

Former motorcycle gang member Gi-su makes his living as a bike messenger. When he delivers a package one day, the building later blows up.  Gi-su must make a series of deliveries within a fixedtime limit—or suffer the consequences.

A retelling of the classic Korean folk tale with eroticism and hu mor, Kim Dae-woo’s The Servant illustrates the pursuits of love and class status.

starring Yu Ho-jeong, Shim Eun-kyeong, Jin Hee-kyung, Kang So-ra, Hong Jin-hee
Set in 1980s Korea, the story follows a group of high school friends who go their separate ways after a sudden accident and reunite 25 years later.
