Even though cinema has embraced music since its inception, and musicals have made for some of the most renowned films ever made, the genre of musical films has been overlooked by the Tony Awards until recently.
That is remedied by The 2nd Annual Tony Awards Film Series (May 12 -13, 2012) at The Paley Center for Media (25 West 52nd St.). This event looks to be more camp than Liberace riding a giant flamingo.
The series is free to the public (seating first come, first served), and showcases three films that encapsulate the past, present, and future of musical cinema:
The Standbys
(World Premiere)
A dramatic documentary about the lives of understudies and standbys, the screening will include a panel discussion by yet to announced Tony winners after the film.
Carol Channing: Larger Than Life
Directed by Dori Berinstein
with co-writer Adam Zucker, Berstein (Show Business, Gotta Dance) has captured the magic and vivacity of Carol Channing’s illustrious career in Larger Than Life. Followed by the film will be a Carol Channing lookalike contest with prizes!
Oklahoma!
The film of the London stage revival of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic stars Hugh Jackman, Maureen Lipman, Shuler Hensley and Josefina Gabrielle. Rather than just a simply playing the film, the screening will also be a sing-a-long.
So why not celebrate this Mothers Day with a little song, a little dance, and more camp than you can possibly handle?
