Going as far back as 1922 with Nanook of the North, the documentary has been a precarious balance between the pursuit of truth while also achieving cinematic beauty. The DOC NYC festival (November 8 – 15, 2012) at the IFC Center (323 6th Avenue, NYC), and the SVA Theatre (333 West 23rd Street, NYC) helps foster new and emerging documentaries and documentarians with a festival assembling stories from around the world.
DOC NYC, which also runs the Stranger Than Fiction series at the IFC Center, not only features a large selection of films, but also includes master classes and expert panels and Q&A sessions.
Building Babel (World Premiere) looks at the controversy surrounding the construction of the “Ground Zero mosque” and how Muslims are struggling to find a place in an increasingly hostile America.
A Girl and A Gun (World Premiere) takes the world of guns that has so long been associated with masculinity and shifts the view to women that are firearm enthusiasts and how they represent American conceptions of sexuality, identity, and unending collisions with violence.
Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines traces the history of comicdom’s favorite lasso wielding Amazon, while also examining the cultural impact of TV series like Wonder Woman and The Bionic Woman.
A documentary for those that cry “death to gentrification”, Zipper: Coney Island’s Last Wild Ride reveals the lengthy real-estate war over the last bastion of “the people’s playground.”
Odd Jobs is a selection of short documentaries about people with peculiar occupations, like knife-sharpening, making life-like dolls for the grief-stricken and running a CD store in an age where physical media is vanishing.
Artifact (US Premiere) follows the band Thirty Seconds to Mars (helmed by Requiem For A Dream actor, Jared Leto) as they struggle with their lengthy lawsuit against Virgin/EMI while also writing songs and having existential crises that people in rock bands are so prone to.
Master Classes also help burgeoning and experienced documentary makers editing (probably the most powerful force a documentarian can wield), finding archival footage, and use of animation and graphics. The Get the Money series of talks helps breaks down funding methods for documentaries such as grants, and equities.
A delicate panoply of ideas, facts, and art, documentaries straddle the line between art and information. DOC NYC takes the reins by creating and unique and varied presentation of films that explore the unseen aspects of our daily lives or put the everyday and the mundane in a new light.
