New York, New Talent at the New Directors/New Film Festival

ndnf-logoMarch in New York City is all about the new -- seasons and otherwise. What better month to look towards new talent rather than the notoriously tepid stuff that lands at the mainstream theater chains where studios usually dump films not good enough to be summer blockbusters or to serve as late year awards fare?

That’s why The Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art continue to join forces in March and serve up a selection of what the combined programming team considers the new, challenging and attention-worthy in their annual New Directions/New Films program.
This year entering its 42nd rotation, ND/NF runs from March 20 - 31, 2013, and will offer features and short length films by new filmmakers across the globe. Screenings alternate between FSLC’s Walter Reade Theater on the Lincoln Center campus and at The Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 1 at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art).
New Director/New Films is a melting pot for fresh faced aptitude where previous entries to the festival have included films from Pedro Almodovar, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater and even Steven Spielberg early on in their illustrious careers.
Highlights of this year's crop includes:

• ND/NF's first Bulgarian film in 35 years, Emil Christov's black comedy spy-movie The Color of the Chameleon

• The North American premiere of the delightful screwball comedy Les Coquillettes, the 340-something French counterpart to Lena Dunham's Girls

• The much talked about documentary People's Park, an immersive look at a Chinese community created with one single tracking shot.

• Actor/Director Sarah Polley's emotional examination of family in Stories We Tell, marking the actress and filmmaker's first documentary foray.

• The North American premiere of Brazilian filmmaker Marcello Loredo's understated drama They'll Come Back.

• The long-awaited follow-up to Shane Carruth's Primer, Upstream Color, a love story embedded in a gripping kidnap plot.
