The funhouse mirror that is Royal Flush Magazine once again celebrates its warped take on pop culture, video games, indie movies and underground music and art at its annual immersion, Royal Flush Festival, October 11 to 18, 2010. Think Mad Magazine and Harvard Lampoon for merrily stunted adults as the pages of this nationally-circulated rag jolt to life through screenings and performances at the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and other New York venues.
Festival curtains will rise on its film segment with Shan Nicholson’s documentary Downtown Calling, in which Blondie’s Deborah Harry narrates the saga of New York’s downtown music and art scene in the 1970s and 1980s. For Festival clinchers, film programmer & co-director Jim Muscarella has slotted El Monstro Del Mar!, Stuart Simpson’s B-movie slasher by way of Australia.
Day one of the Festival will unveil Royal Flush Magazine’s Book 7, from whose covers stare rock star/horror movie director Rob Zombie and the cast of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Zombie will be on hand to sign copies of the magazine plus the bonus edition of Hellbilly Deluxe 2 -- the sequel to his mulit-platinum solo debut album -- at Forbidden Planet in the City.
Music revelers will rock out to such acts as Kaiju Big Battel and guests Poison Ivy League. As fans of the former know to expect, the performance will send up professional wrestling, comic superheroes and the tokusatsu kaiju movies of Japan. Other bands on the fest lineup include Biz Markie, Black Taxi, Kid Savant, Lifted Crew and Dungen with guests The Entrance.
Festival follies continue apace with American Hardcore author Steven Blush, who will stage an “all-ages matinee” including performances by bands such as Urban Waste, Antidote and other topliners of New York’s hardcore scene. George Tabb will emcee the spectacle, spanning a slide show and book signing of American Hardcore II by Blush.
