Korea has been churning out some of the most remarkable films in recent years, creating a fervor not seen since Hong Kong cinema was introduced to American VHS players in the early '90s.
From February 24 - 26, 2012, the BAMcinematek will be holding the 10th New York Korean Film Festival (NYKFF). For 10 years, NYKFF has been bringing some of the best films of the Korean millennial new wave to New York, including the much lauded Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) retrospective at BAM in 2005.
Ever since Oldboy hit the cinema scene in 2003, on up to I Saw the Devil in 2010, Korean cinema has shown no sign of slowing down, both shocking and drawing strong audience reactions that have created an interest in Korean cinema that has spawned several film series and festivals.
This year’s festival features seven films, two of which are making their New York premieres: Kang Woo-suk’s Glove and Lee Hyun-seung’s Hindsight.
The inaugural Winter Film Awards and Film Festival takes place in New York City, February 9th to the 12th, 2012. This event reverses the usual circumstances of combined awards and festival in that the awards are not being present specifically for eligible fest films but for the best of the industry for the previous year of 2011.
Scheduled to be held in Manhattan, the Roy Arias Studios (300 W. 43rd St.) is the event’s primary location.
The Winter Film Awards both promotes and showcases not only new and old talent, but also those making a name in the New York film festival scene. It welcomes people of all backgrounds for a fun time that you will never forget.
Besides the awards for the established indie film industry, there will be screenings of movies being judged at this year's festival.

Winter Film Awards and Film Festival
February 9 - 12, 2012
New York City
Upheaval; it's a subject that the city of Berlin is not unfamiliar with, and it's the motif of this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, being held February 9 - 19, 2012, at the CinemaxX Potsdamer Platz, the CineStar theatres and other venues around Berlin.
The Berlinale, which has been running since 1951, will feature an expected international blend of titles in this year’s selection of over 400 films. But this year, there is a particular focus on Middle Eastern filmmakers.
Casting off the shackles of Tiananmen Square VHS-era technology, the recent Arab Spring was captured in pristine HD, provoking filmmakers from both within and outside the Middle East, to address the subject with films such as Mohammadreza Farzad’s Falgoosh / Blames and Flames.
After a highly successful launch last year, which brought such acclaimed films as Miss Representation and Vision (about Hildegard von Bingen) to New York filmgoers, the Athena Film Festival returns for its second eagerly anticipated run February 9 - 12, 2012 at Barnard College in Uptown Manhattan, New York City.
A "Celebration of Women and Leadership", the Festival is a production of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College and Women and Hollywood.
"The Festival highlights the diversity of women’s leadership in both real life and the fictional world, illuminating the stories of women from across the globe who have made a difference in their countries and communities."
