The 2009 Provocative Thinkers in Science Series, a set of five evening events, brings together world-renowned scientists to explain cutting-edge topics in science to a lay public audience.

 It will be held on weeknights this September through December, 2009.

Says Adrienne Burke, Executive Editor of Science & the City, "Now in its third season, the Science & the City event series serves the Academy's mission to promote the understanding of science in society. This fall our audiences will have the chance to engage with some of the most fascinating minds in research and learn about science that is changing the world, and our understanding of it."

Science & the City events are held in the evenings in the Academy's conference center on the 40th floor of 7 World Trade Center. Wine and cheese receptions and book-signings take place following each lecture.

Tickets: $15 for Academy Members, $20 for students, $25 for general public.

The Greatest Show on Earth: An Evening with Richard Dawkins

In an attempt to incontrovertibly prove the fact of evolution, Dawkins returns to the Academy to launch his new book, The Greatest Show on Earth. Tracing scientific evidence from natural selection, to radioactive dating and the fossil record, to molecular biology and genetics, Dawkins uses data to confront belief.

Celebrating 150 Years of Origin of Species: An Evening with Gerald Edelman, Paul Ekman and Terrence Deacon

Three luminaries from neurobiology, psychology, and linguistics join the Academy to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species, by the Academy's most legendary member and one of the most provocative scientists of all time, Charles Darwin. We'll toast the impact of Darwin's theories with insightful discussion and champagne. Cosponsored by the Center for Inquiry and the Darwin 150 Project.

The Darwin 150 Project, one of the co-sponsors for the Nov. 24th event, is a public science education initiative focused on celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species and bringing the important insights of Darwin and general science to mainstream adults. Our event will be the fifth in a series of events taking place across the U.S.

This project already has over 250,000 fans on Facebook and has set a goal of gathering 1,000,000 fans by the anniversary of the publication of Origin of the Species.

No Small Matter: An Evening with Felice Frankel and George Whitesides
