Now in its eighth year, the Photoville festival returns to Brooklyn for ten days devoted to all things photography. Held at Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO the festival runs September 12 to the 22nd, with “Photo-carnies” (because it’s a carnival-like atmosphere) guiding you to over 80 exhbitions held in repurposed shipping containers.
Container exhibitions include The Closet as Archive, featuring Dr. Deborah Willis which explores the ways in which the concept of memory, beauty, and desire is essential to storytelling. Journalists Under Fire is a collaborative work from various artists that examines journalists and photogs that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Redefining Representation: The Women of the 116th Congress from Elizabeth D Herman and Celeste Sloman, is a look at women serving in the 116th US congress after the recent elections saw a rise in women serving. Spanish Harlem: El Barrio in the ’80s is a series of photos from Joseph Rodríguez of New York’s oldest barrio, which has survived through the decades.
Photoville will also have a series of lectures, talks, and nighttime programming that will take you from the offices of the New York Times to the frontlines of Aleppo, Syria.
