Fotografiska, the New York outpost of the Swedish museum of photography, is lining up a special four day festival called Fotofête. Running September 9th to the 12th at Fotografiska (281 Park Ave South, NY, NY), smack dab in the Flatiron District, Fotofête encompases photography from New York and beyond.
Opening the fest on September 9th is High Tea With Hassan Hajjaj, in which visitors can enjoy tea with Morocan photographer Hassan Hajjaj while also seeing his work. Inspired by the artist’s tea room in Marrakech, guests are invited to enjoy tea from his brand Jajjah, light bites, and conversation. Also on September 9th is Art Comes First x Hassan Hajjaj, celebrating the launch of the capsule collection created by Art Comes First x Andy Wahloo, as Hassan photographs this new fashion line. And rounding out the September 9th festivities is a performance by Subatomic Sound System with an opening set by DJ Troy Simms.
Thursday, September 10 is the opening of the new exhibit, Andy Warhol: Photo Factory, featuring over 120 images, 20 of which have never been exhibited, showing the photographic side of the Pop Art Pope. On the same day is a performance by singer/songwriter Mike Greko.
On September 11, there will be the book launch of A Photo Spirit by Ruth Orkin with a discussion between Kristen Gresh, the Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Senior Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and Mary Engel, Director of the Ruth Orkin Archive.
September 12 has the Family Fun Day with Hassan Hajjaj, where portrait artist, filmmaker and educator Catalina Kulczar along with visiting artist Hassan Hajjaj give family friendly tours explaining the artistic process of photography. There are also two film screening: A Day in the Life of Karima: A Henna Girl, and the 50th anniversary screening of The Panic in Needle Park. Directed and produced by Hassan Hajjaj, A Day in the Life of Krima follows Karima, who is a mother, wife, henna artist, local icon and graduate of what he calls "Jamaa Fena: the university of street life". The Panic in Needle Park is a 1971 romantic drama starring Al Pacino and Kitty Winn about the gritty world of early 1970s New York as heroin addicts try to find love. A Q&A will follow the screening, featuring actress Kitty Winn, Cinematographer Adam Holender, Photographer and Film Director Jerry Shatzberg, and moderator Carlos Valladares.
