One of the longest-running and most most exciting sporting events of the season, The Silver Skate Festival will be returning for its 22nd year this week from February 17th – 21st in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
Featuring an astounding array of art, culture and sports programming unlike anything else in the world, this all-age winter celebration features an enormous range of entertainment and fun including world-class snow sculptures, skate races, live music and the famed Baba Yaga Trail. Some of the most exciting events featured include:
Interactive Winter Programming
A gigantic assortment of free events and activities for every age group, including an ice slide, free cross country ski and snowshoe rentals, ice games, sledge hockey, family snow sculpting, horse drawn sleigh rides, facepainting and dog sledding demonstrations by the Northern Alberta Mushers Association.
Snow Sculpture Competition
One of the most notable competitions in this art form, the Silver Skate Sculpture Garden features twelve teams from around the world battle against each other to create the most impressive sculpture from enormous, eight foot tall blocks of snow.
Baba Yaga and the Firebird Trail
One of the most famed features of the festival, this performance spectacle uses ingenious combinations of lights, snow, ice and costumed actors to take audience members on a fantastical journey in search of the legendary Firebird, culminating in a breathtaking fire sculpture.
Edmonton Winter Triathalon
A one-of-a-kind event for world-class athletes to novices, this intense course, featuring skating, skiing and running, this challenging 5-10 km course promotes friendly competition in skaters, skiers and runners of any age, allowing them to participate in either solo or team relay formats. Kortebaan
This traditional Dutch speed skating sprint race features a fun-filled competition has a long, storied history and was one of the first formats used to declare speed skating champions. Historically, the champion won prize money and a ham; Today, this good-natured race focuses on fun!
Night Works in the Park
Enjoy an unforgettable night of live music, dance and light spectacles! This year’s Night Works includes performances by Murdoch & Sparrow, folk-pop artist Jason Kodie, francophone folk-rockers Allez Ouest, singer-songwriter Terry Morrison, electronica group Neko Rei, Edmonton-based songwriters F&M, Donovan Workun & Atomic Improv, young up-and-coming rock group Psychic City, and interactive dance troupe Vibe Tribe.
