The Armory Show NYC

The Armory Show is being held from March 4-7, 2010 at Piers 92 and 94 in New York City. The Armory Show is America's leading fine art fair devoted to the most important art of the 20th and 21st centuries. In its 12 years, the fair has become an international institution as artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world make New York their destination during Armory Arts Week.

The Armory Show 2010 also features The Armory Show – Modern, specializing in modern and secondary market material. Events include VIP Program Tours of top collectors’ homes, private receptions at top museums and at embassies and consulates, and dozens of other exclusive events.

"Armory Focus" is a new section featuring an important art community. This year, Armory Focus premieres with 22 of the best galleries from Berlin, among them the Buchmann Galerie, Galerie Cinzia Friedlaender, Tanya Leighton Gallery and Galerie Barbara Weiss.
Our goal is to cross-pollinate art communities," says Executive Director Katelijne De Backer. “We want our Berlin dealers to benefit from the vitality of Armory Arts Week and for New York City to benefit from Berlin’s creativity.”

This year’s Commissioned Artist is Susan Collis, who provides images as part of the visual identity for the 2010 fair. Collis is known for painstaking facsimiles of mundane objects, which force viewers to reconsider details they may not have initially paid attention to. In Made Good , a typical piece for the artist, what initially looks like a Phillips screw sticking out of the gallery wall is in fact made of gems and precious metals.

As part of the installation/performance SWEAT, a digital clock seems to mark time in the background, Bbut the display is not an LCD – instead, the time is a stop-motion animation composed of 12,000 individual drawings. Emblematic of Collis' extreme perseverance, the clock is unfinished and will take approximately two more years to complete.

Collis has also produced special editions to benefit the Pat Hearn and Colin de Land Cancer Foundation and the Pat Hearn and Colin de Land Acquisition Fund for The Museum of Modern Art.

This year's "Open Forum" includes conversations with such top figures in the art world as Collis, Brett Littman, Maria Jose Arjona and Jovana Stokić. Panels discuss among other topics:

"The World is Not Enough: The Future of Biennials"
"Online, Offline, Flatline: Art Publishing Now"
"Ask Los Artistas"
"Post-what?"

This year The Armory Show features 280 galleries from 31 countries.
