Established in 1981, The BAM Next Wave Festival (September 5, 2012 - January 19, 2013, 651 Fulton Street, Brooklyn) combines dance, theater, music, and cinema.
Next Wave features a special presentation of Ernst Lubitsch's lost 1922 classic, The Loves of Pharaoh. Originally considered lost to time, Pharaoh is being shown with a new restoration and an original score by Joseph C. Phillips Jr. and performed by his a18-piece new music ensemble, Numinous. The screening will be followed by an after-show talk with Phillips and Thomas Bakels.
Iceland's Vesturport Theatre, in collaboration with Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, reinterpret Goethe’s Faust as a circus-like stage production. I wonder if Faust will be given a “red right hand” in this production.
HOUSE / DIVIDED is a technological stage-show and allegory for the direness of the disenfranchised of America by alternating between excerpts from Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath and contemporary stories of economic and social woes.
In the realm of dance, Tony and Olivier Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan (The Lion King) and Grammy Award-winning musician, composer, and bandleader Wynton Marsalis put on the world premiere of Lighthouse/Lightning Rod, performed with excerpts from Griot New York (from the 1991 New Wave fest).
The music portion of Next Wave features a red hot tribute to Cuban music, performances by Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale, and the operatic love fail from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang.
As part of a series of talks, composer Philip Glass (Glass premiered his opera Satyagraha at the inaugural Next Wave fest) will lecture on opera and film composition. There will also be a production of Glass’ 1976 meta-opera Einstein on the Beach.
An eclectic mix of the arts, the BAM Next Wave Festival continues to break new ground.
