One of the more fascinating art events in NYC, the Outsider Art Fair returns February 29th to March 3 at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 W 18th Street, NY, NY). The OAF features 63 exhibitors—including nine who are showing for the first time— from 32 cities spanning eight countries, plus two special presentations for OAF’s trademark Curated Spaces.

Other highlights include Ricco Maresca’s presentation of original gouache paintings for classic American circus posters from the early 20th century. James Barron’s booth will include works by Janet Sobel (1893-1968), whose solo exhibition at Houston’s Menil Collection opens the week prior. Alexander Dijulio will feature a survey of Balinese painters with works from the 1930s up to the present, and Emilia Galatis will showcase Indigenous art from Australia. Andrew Edlin will debut the miniature landscape assemblages by retired NYC firefighter Dennis Gordon, and first-time exhibitor Hashimoto Contemporary will show Abigail Goldman’s “die-o-ramas,” miniature scenes of gruesome murders rendered in plastic and acrylic that evoke her career as an investigator at the Public Defender’s office in Bellingham, WA.

For this year’s Curated Spaces, OAF joins forces with longtime exhibitor Creative Growth Art Center to celebrate its 50th anniversary as one of the world’s longest running and most dynamic independent art centers for people with disabilities. Director Emeritus Tom di Maria will curate Expanding the Canon: 50 Years of Creative Growth, featuring artworks sourced from private collections including never-before-exhibited pieces by Dwight Mackintosh, Donald Mitchell, William Scott, Monica Valentine, Aurie Ramirez, William Tyler, and Judith Scott.

The Art Show: The Closest You Can Get To Art Without a Brush

One of NYC’s biggest art events is back to ring in Autumn. The Art Show runs November 2 to the 5th at the Park Avenue Armory. Organized annually by the Art Dealers Association of America, The Art Show is a curated exhibition of some of the top art dealers and galleries in the US, featuring contemporary and historical works. An intimate selection of works to see up close.

 Programming during The Art Show includes artist performances and dynamic keynote presentations for audiences to engage with. In conjunction with their booth presentation, Michael Werner Gallery will host a magazine launch and book signing for Peter Saul, who is featured in King Kong Magazine's most recent "Americana" edition. Special Limited Edition issues of King Kong Magazine with artwork by Saul on the cover will be available for purchase, as well as copies of Saul’s monograph by Rizzoli and recent exhibition catalogs. The artist will be present to sign catalogs. Alliances and Exchange: Asian American Diasporic Artists in 1960s New York is a panel discussion bringing together  Asian American curators, scholars, and art administrators looking at how Asian artists made alliances and created networks of exchange in order to come to the United States and make sustainable studio practices in New York in the 1960s. The Meet the Artists event allows visitors to the fair to learn more about exhibitor presentations directly from the artists whose work is on view and from the experts associated with historical presentations.

Founded in 1994, The Armory Show is one of, if not the biggest art expo in NYC, and September 8th to the 10th it’s going to be at the Javits Center. This year’s show has over 225 leading international galleries exhibiting, representing more than 35 countries. The Solo section focuses on intimate presentations of work by a single emerging, established, or historic artist working in the 20th or 21st century, while the Focus portion of the show will be dedicated to emergent and established  solo- and dual-artists outside the mainstream. The Platform secretion of the show is dedicated to large scale installation pieces that challenge the canon of art.

Special programming for the show includes Armory Talks panel discussions, Armory Week Events that happen across the city, and special private guided tours of the show. Tickets are on sale now.
