Charlie Parker Jazz Festival Brings Music & Film to NYC

Music is the lifeblood of the city, and no festival encapsulates that like the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. New York City’s annual salute to the eponymous late saxophonist, will return in its 31st year for a three-day celebration (August 25 - 27, 2023) of live jazz in the neighborhoods near where Parker worked and lived, including Harlem’s historic Marcus Garvey Park and Tompkins Square Park in the East Village. And alongside the festival are additional events happening throughout NYC. Each year, some of the finest jazz musicians in the world are assembled who reflect “the Bird’s” musical individuality and genius, to promote appreciation for this highly influential and world-renowned artist.
Just before the start of the festival, on August 24, Antoine Roney Trio with Spaceman Patterson and Jordan Young will perform a concert at the Hansborough Recreation Center (35 W 134th St, New York, NY). Following the performance is a screening of the 2022 Christina Kallas film Paris in Harlem. The film is a multi-character mosaic set in 2017, on the day that New York City’s infamous Cabaret or "No Dancing" Law was repealed after 91 years of institutional racism targeting musicians and business owners of color.
And once the fest gets started there’s even more to see. This year’s lineup will bring together storied, veteran players and the next generation of jazz artists including Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band and T.K Blue in association with Jazzmobile; groundbreaking jazz supergroup The Cookers; legendary jazz saxophonist Charles McPherson and the celebrated Vincent Herring Septet performing Something Else! among others.

Festival of Indian Music: Three Nights of Music & Tradition

The Indo-American Arts Council presents three nights of music across generations with the Festival of Indian Music. Running August 11th to the 13th, the festival is held at venues across NYC. The festival opens with a celebration of Indian classical singer Vijay Kichlu with portions of the documentary Raga Revelry being shown. On August 12th Padma Shri Malini Awasthi performs as she sings in Bhojpuri, Awadhi and Hindi. The Government of India awarded her the civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 2016. She is known for her contribution in Bhojpuri music. The festival concludes August 13th with Three Generations In Concert, with the Three Generation Quintet representing the 6th, 7th and 8th generation of musicians coming together on stage. The concert will feature Sarod Grand Master Amjad Ali Khan and his virtuoso sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash on Sarods. They will be joined by Ayaan’s 10 year old Twins Zohaan Ali Bangash and Abeer Ali Bangash. The family recently completed a five city tour in India.

Four days of Celtic music, culture and celebration are coming to the scenic Milwaukee, August 17 to 20th. The Milwaukee Irish Fest, held at Henry Maier Festival Park, is a multi day celebration of all things Irish with over 100 musical acts.

Whet your appetite at 35 food stalls, plus Jameson whisky tasting, ciders, and real Irish cream. The Cultural Pavilion brings all things Irish and Celtic to the festival through digital and physical displays. New this year, Limerick born artist and photographer Paul Ward is displaying his Imagining Ireland photo exhibit at the festival. Black and Irish in Dublin is set up to highlight and celebrate the identity of Black and Mixed Race Irish people. The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland and the Irish Consulate in Chicago will again be providing a pop-up display, curated by their staff. The festival will also have an exhibit on the 100 Anniversary of the end of the Irish Civil War, as well as the Mythology of Ireland; the Fauna of Ireland; and the story of Colmcille.
The Theatre Pavillion presents a range of plays for audience enjoyment. This year the Pavillion features Fishamble: The New Play Company from Dublin, Ireland.
This year the Milwaukee Irish Fest will be hosting a Global Scholars Symposium with the Institute of Study Abroad Ireland with a keynote lecture that dives into the shared narratives of Ireland and the United States of America.

Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City: Music & More Across NYC

Lincoln Center's second annual Summer for the City, running June 14 to August 12, features hundreds of free events and thousands of artists in celebration of the vibrant cultural communities of NYC. Lincoln Center’s city-wide festivities feature llong-standing traditions of social dance and classical music, and new events like a mass wedding at Lincoln Center for participating couples, and a ‘second line’ processional, emulating New Orleans jazz musicians and how they memorialize lives lost.
The festival is a collaboration with a multitude of artists and thinkers across the city. Festivities begin with 8 y Más featuring Lucrecia performing at Josie Robertson Plaza, with salsa dance instruction for visitors. Summer for the City has everything from a celebration of Korean cultural traditions during Korean Arts Week, the New York City premiere of Octavia E. Butler's Parable of the Sower, a week-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, to the return of the BAAND Together Dance Festival, globalFEST, and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra concerts. Whether it’s having a lunch break at any of our outdoor dining options, taking selfies with the installation of 200 flamingoes, or staying late for a silent disco.
Artist Clint Ramos collaborates with Lincoln Center, putting illustrations and art on their campus all summer long. Our spaces include The Garden, Hearst Plaza, The Underground at Jaffe Drive, The Reading Room, and The Dance Floor at Josie Robertson Plaza, the centerpiece of the festival and the city’s largest outdoor dance floor with a, now iconic, mega disco ball for social dance nights, silent discos, and more.
