Ironically the Indian food in Manhattan is much better than all the meals I had on my visits to the subcontinent. Its the superior raw materials available in the United States.
Here are a few of well-known and respected Big Apple faves:
Surya --

Yuva --
is another high-end Upper East side Indian. The food is delectable though not cheap.Dawat --
Chola --
serves yummy Indian food to a loyal East side clientel. Don't miss the bargain $13.95 lunch buffet.
Amma --
serves gourmet level Northern Indian cuisine. The space is small and a bit cramped but you will be rewarded by the fab food.
Ada --
is pricey but the food is a trip to Nirvana, Eat here on the cheap at the $14.95 lunch.
Banjara --
is a great value in the East Village's curry row. Service can be spotty but the low price rules.
Chennai Garden --
