The 11th Annual Russian Film Week in New York

From Friday, October 28th to Friday, November 4th, 2011, The 11th Annual RBB-Russian-Filmussian Film Week in New York will take place with screenings in Manhattan’s Village East Cinemas.

The fest opens with a premiere  and a gala reception as well as a special performance supported by the Jazz Foundation for the Arts.

Global Advertising Strategies in partnership with the Russian Ministry of Culture and Studio Clotho kicks off the second decade of celebrating Russian film with a new look and mission for its signature event of the year.

The closing night will feature an invitation-only screening, followed by the official closing party on November 4th.

This annual showcase of Russia’s modern filmmaking consists of public and private film screenings, premiere parties as well as Q & A sessions with the cast and directors.

Founded in 2000, the Russian Film Week in New York has become an international celebration of culture, unity and artistic expression. The oldest and most prestigious film showcase of the modern Russian cinema in North America, it offers a unique opportunity for insight into the complex world of filmmaking in a non-Hollywood tradition.

Its diverse audience is a testament to the power of transcending cultural and language boundaries – ranging from people interested in foreign cinema to Russian expats to New York students hungry for thought-provoking content.

In an effort to promote foreign films in the United States, the event allows Russian filmmakers -- veterans and newcomers alike -- to showcase their work to a U.S. audience, as well as an opportunity to network with industry insiders in New York City, the most influential and progressive center of international filmmaking.

Each year, a committee compiles a diverse film selection that appeals to a large audience. The list for 2011 includes intellectual narratives, provocative art-house films, blockbusters, comedies as well as documentaries.

Some of this year's features include:

  • Siberir-Monamur by Slava Ross
  • My Dad Baryshnikov by Dmitri Povolotsky
  • Indifference by Oleg Fliangolts

A talent scout for global short film festival Future Shorts, Katie Metcalfe curates this year's film selection. A film industry veteran and a Sundance Film Festival programmer, Metcalfe has contributed her expertise to the Vimeo Festival + Awards as well as the GenArt Film Festival, and has been a featured panelist on filmmaking at the Venice Film Festival, the Edinburgh Film Festival, BAFTA in London and BAM in New York.

This Annual Russian cultural event is supported by NYC Media (part of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment,) NYCgo, The Jazz Foundation for the Arts, Fox Studios, the Russian-American Cultural Center, as well as Film Movement and Kino International, one of the largest North American distributors of foreign film festival movies.

Additional programming is organized by Global Advertising Strategies and Studio Clotho, and supported by The Big Screen Project, Nooka, Future Shorts as well as the event’s media partners -- the Village Voice and Flavorpill.
