Return of Scary Movies to Lincoln Center

Scary Movies returns for a fifth year from October 27 - 31, 2011 at Lincoln Centescary-film-Reanimatorr‛s Walter Reade Theater in Manhattan, New York City.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has again come up with an intriguing mix of thrillers and chillers, both new and classic, for the Halloween weekend.

The Opening Night film is Kill List, directed by Ben Wheatley, whose follow-up to his Down Terrace is a three-in-one thriller: domestic drama, hitman thriller, and occult horror". But the film is by no means as cut and dried as those labels. Starring David Bowen, Harry Simpson, Michael Smiley, MyAnna Buring, MyAnna Buring, Neil Maskell.

The Closing Night screening is Nevermore – An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe. This special presentation is a hybrid: an episode from a television series followed by a live theatrical performance.

The Black Cat, directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli, is an episode from Masters of Horror. Jeffrey Combs starred as Edgar Allan Poe, and proceeded to evolve his guest shot as Poe into a one-man show which has already earned him rave reviews in LA, Baltimore and Montreal.

Some other new films are:scary-film-Cat-2

Midnight Son
dir. Scott Leberecht
starring Zak Kilberg, Maya Parish, Jo D. Jonz, Larry Cedar
One hesitates to use the "V" word so quickly and give the wrong impression. Jacob is just a decent, solitary guy who works as a night watchman since he has a skin disorder that requires him to avoid sunlight. So what if he‛s diurnally challenged? At least he hasn't been drinking blood. Yet.

The Cat
dir. Byun Seung-wook (Korea)
starring Park Min-yeong, Kim Ye-Ron, Kim Dong-Wook, Shin Da-Eun
A young pet groomer temporarily inherits the cat of a client who mysteriously died. The latest K-horror flick is That Darn Cat with a Grudge.

The Theatre Bizarre
dir. Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini, Richard Stanley
starring Udo Kier
This omnibus film features six segments by notable genre directors, covering such grounds as occultism, revenge torture, food fetishes, eyeball terror, and even a meditation on death. The increasingly human puppet who introduces each story is none other than Udo Kier.

Actors Kier, Debbie Rochon and Lindsay Goranson, producer Daryl Tucker, and directors Buck, Giovinazzo, Gregory, Kasten and Savini will be present.scary-film-Usher-Price-2

Some of the older, classic films are:

House of Usher (1960)
dir. Roger Corman
starring Vincent Price, Mark Damon, Myrna Fahey
Richard Matheson adapted the Poe short story about the cursed New England Usher family and the older brother‛s determination to end the curse -- by terminating the bloodline. A fitting selection for the centennial of Price‛s birth.

The Seventh Victim (1943)
dir. Mark Robson
starring Kim Hunter, Tom Conway, Jean Brooks, Isabel Jewell
A young girl scours Greenwich Village in search of her missing sister and happens upon a cult of Satan worshipers. Produced by Val Lewton, this movie is highly regarded as a "film way ahead of its time".

Re-Animator (1985)
dir. Stuart Gordon
starring Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott, Barbara Crampton
A medical student and his girlfriend become involved in an experiment to revive the dead. This "camp classic of epic proportions" was adapted from a Lovecraft story. Director Gordon and actor Combs will be present to introduce the film.

The Scary Movies series has never failed to deliver, and this year is no different.
