Extreme Private Ethos: Japanese Documentary Series

While a new wave of Japanese documentaries emerging from the fallout of the March 11 tsunami and nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, The Asia Society (725 Park Avenue at 70th Street, NYC)  will mark the anniversary of this inauspicious occasion, from March 10 to the 31st, 2012, by looking at doccumentaries past with Japan in Extreme Private Ethos: Japanese Doccumentaries.extreme private eros resize

This special film series features six films made by Japan's most controversial douccmentary makers. The Society, founded in 1956 by famed philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, provides a forum for the issues and viewpoints reflected in both traditional and contemporary Asian art, and has become a cornerstone in the proliferation of quality Asian films and performance art in the United States.

New Nordic Cinema Showcase 2012

King of Devils IslandA rare treat for any foreign film buff, the Scandinavia House of New York City brings some of the most influential and successful Nordic films to the streets of the Big Apple.

Featuring popular award-winning films, from Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Norway and Sweden you will not find anywhere else, including performances by Stellan Skarsgård from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the upcoming summer blockbuster The Avengers, the New Nordic Cinema Showcase allows a glimpse into the rapidly expanding and evolving film industry of the Scandinavian countries. The showcase runs from February 29th – May 4th in the Victor Borge Hall. All films are subtitled in English.

The 10th Annual New York Korean Film Festival

Korea has been churning out some of the most remarkable films in recent years, crkorean-film-Sunny-tooeating a fervor not seen since Hong Kong cinema was introduced to American VHS players in the early '90s.  

From February 24 - 26, 2012, the BAMcinematek will be holding the 10th New York Korean Film Festival (NYKFF). For 10 years, NYKFF has been bringing some of the best films of the Korean millennial new wave to New York, including the much lauded Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) retrospective at BAM in 2005.

Ever since Oldboy hit the cinema scene in 2003, on up to I Saw the Devil in 2010, Korean cinema has shown no sign of slowing down, both shocking and drawing strong audience reactions that have created an interest in Korean cinema that has spawned several film series and festivals.

This year’s festival features seven films, two of which are making their New York premieres: Kang Woo-suk’s Glove and Lee Hyun-seung’s Hindsight.

The Winter Film Awards and Film Festival Debuts

The inaugural Winter Film Awards and Film Festival takes place in New York City, February 9th  to the 12th, 2012. This event reverses the usual circumstances of combined awards and festival in that the awards are not being present specifically for eligible fest films but for the best of the industry for the previous year of 2011.

Scheduled to be held in Manhattan, the Roy Arias Studios (300 W. 43rd St.) is the event’s primary location.

The Winter Film Awards both promotes and showcases not only new and old talent, but also those making a name in the New York film festival scene. It welcomes people of all backgrounds for a fun time that you will never forget.

Besides the awards for the established indie film industry, there will be screenings of movies being judged at this year's festival.

Several examples are listed below:

The Three Way
This feature film is about relationships, what may or may not go bad and the consequences of that.

Time Again
Here is a feature film that provides action through a science fiction scenario about getting a second chance to make things right which is a wild ride for all.

Fast Talk - When Words Will Leave You Breathless
This documentary about debate teams shows that there are more important things than competition.

EMANNzipation
Of the foreign films, this feature length production is about great pain, uncommon issues, and the "light at the end of the tunnel."

The Awards Show will take place on Sunday, Feb. 12th on American Primetime Television or APTV.

The specific locations to be announced for both The screenings will take place at the Roy Arias Studios (300 W 43rd. St.) while the locations for the awards show and  parties have yet to be confirmed; pay attention to the website for updates.

Tickets range from $10 per individual screening to $100 for an all-access pass. Total access includes  screenings, parties, awards show and after party.

The inaugural Winter Film Awards will not disappoint, at least in terms of its ambitions if nothing else.
