Breaking New Ground at The 46th WorldFest-Houston Intl Film Festival

68
Discovery is an unassuming process at WorldFest-Houston International Film and Video Festival, a haven for indie films the world over. With over 50 films, 100 shorts, and 9 world premieres this year alone, this sun-scortched festival will play out over ten days, April 12-21, at the AMC Studio 30.

In it's reputable past, the WorldFest-Houston has been responsible for discovering some of the biggest names still working in the film industry today- Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, Francis Ford Coppola, the Coen Brothers and countless others. With approximately 550 independent filmmakers in attendance, when they say that the next auteur could be out in the crowd, they really means it.

Notable entries to this year's festival include:

  • "Filly Brown" - This visceral flick offers an unscrupulous look at a rising Latina hip-hop talent trying to balance her aspiration for stardom while staying true to herself and stars Gina Rodrigeuz, Jenni Rivera and Lou Diamond Phillips. Filly Brown will open the festival.

  • "Different Drummers" - Lyle Hatcher's true story about two young Spokane boys, one of which suffers from muscular dystrophy and one from ADD, who attempt a zany science project to test the existence of God.

  • "The Wing in the House of the Dead" - an Italian horror film charts the fall of disgraced-movie-star-turned-thief who seeks shelter in the wrong house in 1947.

  • "The Nowhere Son- Written, shot and directed by San Banarje, this Indian/American cross-over production sees Physician Sanjay Chakroborty engage in a land battle with a greedy hotel baron. When his father mysteriously goes missing, he must account for what really matters in life.

The WorldFest Houston runs from April 12-21 and tickets are available for each screening, however in the past this event has often sold out. For more information visit: www.worldfest.org.
