IFP Week Fosters the Cinematic Arts

ifpNow in its 34th installment, the Independent Film Week (September 16 – 20, 2012), organized by the Independent Film Project (IFP) brings together new talent in the world of independent films with industry movers-and-shakers.  Film makers shopping around new projects, scripts in development, and new films looking for distribution get the helping hand they need through the Independent Film Week at Lincoln Center.

Project Forum assembles 165 films from around the world (documentary and narrative) that are looking for that last financial push to get them out the door along 25 scripts in development.  Directors taking part in the Project Forum include:

Deron Albright (The Destiny of Lesser Animals)
Eleanor Burke & Ron Eyal (Stranger Things)
Brian Crano (Bag of Hammers)
Dustin Guy Defa (Bad Fever)
Clay Jeter (JESS +MOSS)
Eric Juhola (Off The Grid: Life On The Mesa)
Malcom Murray (Bad Posture)
Matthew Porterfield (Putty Hill)

The Future Forward Industry Initiative is a series of programs and talks that look to foster filmmaking and presentation. This includes a producer workshop and the IFP Festival Forum where film fest organizers can meet and discuss their craft and woes (hey, brining over film prints from around the globe aint cheap, you know) and the New International Partners & Initiatives which assembles producers from international markets.

The Filmmaker Conference is a series of talks and seminars focusing on the creative side of the filmmaking process. This includes a special analysis of the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. Meet the Descision Makers is a ticketed even that lets people meet with top distributors, agents & managers, and filmmakers’ grants and fellowships.  Attendees at the event include:

Steve Coulson (Campfire Media)
Nicole Emanuele (YouTube)
Eric Brown (Kornhaber Brown)
Karol Martesko-Fenster (Cinelan)
Daniel Minahan (DirectorGame of Thrones, True Blood, Series 7)
Jon Reiss (distribution strategist)

Independent Film Week plays the part of the mediator between the starving artist and the cigar chomping executive that doesn’t “get” what filmmakers are talking about. Okay, that’s a tired cliché, but IFP definitely plays an important role in the fostering and guiding of emerging talents.

New York Comic Con Returns: Bigger Than Ever (For Better or Worse)!

NYCCI remember when the New York Comic Con was an upstart con that had to share space with the NY Times Travel Show. Now the convention has grown exponentially to the point where it may not be quite as huge as San Diego Comic Con, but it’s definitely gunning to be the east coast equivalent.

This rapid growth and increased attention does raise a few questions. Lately it seems that SDCC has become less and less about actual comic books, and more about movies, video games, and all forms of media and pop culture BUT comics. Will NYCC share the same fate?

MB Fashion Week -- Spring Collections 2013 -- How I Learned To Stop Worrying & Love Lacoste

fashion weekFor the uninitiated, Fashion Week seasonally inaugurates the current collection of a set of designers -- some veterans, other the hungry and trendy. Once a bastion of Paris or Milan, the internationalization of this community building experience really took off once the Fashion Week rooted in NYC went beyond the industry and became intergrated in the city's cultural life -- a celebration of special crowd of the cool and terminally "In."

The Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, held in Manhattan, September 5 – 13, 2012, brings previews of the latest fashions to locations all throughout the city and kicks off at the New York Public Library (476 5th Avenue) with an exhibition of clothes from Joseph Abboud on September 5th.

Primarily situated on the Lincoln Center campus, most of the designers show their latest wares -- whether formal or casual, cutting edge or classic -- and hope those in the first row pay attention whiel the wags in the back provide "oohs" and "ahhs."
