Bringing together young talent, seasoned veterans, and creative minds from all over the world, for years MoCCA has embodied the ever-changing landscape of independent comics. Taking place at Center 548 (548 W 22nd St., New York, NY) near the scenic High Line, this year’s MoCCA Fest features a wide range guests.
Guests include Raina Telgemeier (Eisner Award winner and author of New York Times bestsellers Smile and Drama), alt-comix luminary Aline Kominsky-Crumb (Need More Love, contributor to Wimmen’s Comix), and Scott McCloud (the newly released The Sculptor, along with Understanding Comics, and Zot!). International guests include Pénélope Bagieu (Exquisite Corpse), Annie Goetzinger (Girl in Dior), and Ilan Manouach (MetaKatz, a journey through copyright infringement and reinterpreting Art Spiegelman’s Maus).
MoCCA Fest also includes a series of panel discussions and Q&As with it’s guests on subjects including the history of alt-weekly comics, the artistic technique behind making memorable images, and the precarious line between plagiarism and inspiration. Named after the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, MoCCA is organized by the Society of Illustrators, who acquired the museum in 2012, and have organized the festival since.
