A Short Guide To Eating Indian Food in Manhattan

Ironically the Indian food in Manhattan is much better than all the meals I had on my visits to the subcontinent. Its the superior raw materials available in the United States.

Here are a few of well-known and respected Big Apple faves:

Surya --
offers multi-regional Indian food at modest prices, The setting is peacefully minimalist with a pleasant garden

Tamarind --
serves haute Indian food at a price. The staff is very professional and the food is well seasoned. There is a $24 prix fixe lunch.

Yuva --

is another high-end Upper East side Indian. The food is delectable though not cheap.

Vatan --
is an all you can eat Indian veggie place. The interior is a bit over the top, but the food is toothsome and plentiful.

Indus Valley --
is modestly priced and spiced to your taste Upper West side Indian place. The prix fixe lunch at $12.95 is a great deal.

Haveli --
is a cut above its curry mill East Village neighbors. The  moderate pricing and higher food consiousness make it special.

Dawat --
is chef and author Madhur Jaffrey's temple of Indian cuisine. Prices are on the high side but the delicious food justifies.

Chola --
serves yummy Indian food to a loyal East side clientel. Don't miss the bargain $13.95 lunch buffet.

Amma --
serves gourmet level Northern Indian cuisine. The space is small and a bit cramped but you will be rewarded by the fab food.

Ada --
is pricey but the food is a trip to Nirvana, Eat here on the cheap at the $14.95 lunch.

Banjara --
is a great value in the East Village's curry row. Service can be spotty but the low price rules.

Chennai Garden --
is a kosher vegetarian Indian restaurant. You won't miss the carne at this delectable Upper East destination.
